Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator Magnetic Phone Mount: MagSafe on the Trail
A Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator magnetic phone mount is really two parts: the magnet that holds the phone, and the base that holds the magnet. Most of them get the magnet right and the base wrong. Ours bolts the base to the dash at factory hardware points, puts a 1" (25.4 mm) SpinLok ball on it, and then lets you choose the magnet. This is how that setup goes together, and when we would leave the magnet at home.
The Jeep Magnetic Mount, Built Right
Order the Jeep dash mount kit for a 2018-2023 Wrangler JL, 2021-2023 4xe or 2020-2023 Gladiator, add the 1.5" arm and the magnetic, MagSafe-compatible holder. Tick wireless charging if you want the phone topping up on the trail. That is the whole Jeep magnetic phone mount, and every piece of it is bolted or clamped, not stuck.
What the Magnetic Holder Is
A magnetic head compatible with the MagSafe ring on iPhone 12 and newer. Phones without MagSafe use the included magnetic disc. The back of the holder is the same SpinLok interface and 1" ball as the cradle, which gives it 71% more clamping area than a 20 mm ball and stops it loosening as you adjust it. Wireless charging is an option at checkout. The look is plain on purpose: it is meant to disappear into the dash.
Why the Base Matters More Than the Magnet
Holding force is a number on a box. What the phone feels on washboard is that force minus everything the base gives up: flex in a vent clip, creep in an adhesive pad, slop in a grab-handle clamp. The Jeep kit gives up nothing, because it is bolted to the dash structure, and the SpinLok ball resists backing off under vibration. Put a good magnet on a moving base and the magnet gets blamed. Put it on this base and it just holds.
Keep the arm short. Every inch of arm multiplies the leverage the trail puts on the magnet, so the 1.5" arm is the right call in a JL or JT. Reach is the only reason to go to 3".
The Honest Version
| Day | Head | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily driving, trailhead runs, doors on | Magnetic holder | One hand on, one hand off. Charging while you drive if you ticked the option. |
| Hard trail day, top off, rock | Spring-loaded cradle | Mechanical grip does not care about shock loads. |
| Thick case or no magnet ring | Spring-loaded cradle | A magnet through a thick wallet case is a weak magnet. |
| Battery pack on the phone | Spring-loaded cradle | The magnet grabs the pack, not the phone, and the pack adds weight and leverage. |
Both heads clamp to the same ball, so owning both costs one extra head and takes ten seconds to swap. That is what we would do in a Jeep that sees both kinds of day.
Doors Off
Sun, rain and dust reach everything in an open Jeep. The ball and arm under it are 6061-T6 aluminum with stainless hardware, and there is nothing adhesive anywhere in the stack to cook in July. Rinse the dust off the magnet face now and then so the phone seats flat.
Step by Step
- Install the Jeep dash mount at the factory hardware points. No drilling.
- Thread the SpinLok ball into the base and snug it.
- Clamp the 1.5" arm on the ball and the magnetic holder on the arm. Finger tight.
- Put the phone on the magnet, set the angle so the screen sits beside your sightline and clear of the vents, tighten the knob.
- If you chose wireless charging, route the cable along the arm with cable clips.
Jeep Magnetic Phone Mount FAQs
Is a magnetic mount safe for my phone?
Yes. The magnets in a MagSafe-compatible mount do not harm phone storage, batteries or screens. Keep cards with magnetic stripes out of a wallet case and you are fine.
Will it work with an Android phone?
Yes. The holder includes a magnetic disc for phones without MagSafe.
Does it charge the phone?
If you choose the wireless charging option at checkout. The standard magnetic holder does not.
Will it hold on washboard?
On a short arm, bolted to the dash, yes for most drivers. For rock and heavy cases we would run the cradle.
Does the same setup fit a Gladiator?
Yes. The JL and JT share the dash kit, so the magnetic holder goes on the same way.

Good magnet, better base
The Jeep kit bolts to the dash, the magnetic holder clamps to the ball, and the phone comes off with one hand.
