How to Mount an iPad or Tablet in a Truck (Without Suction Cups or Vent Clips)
A phone will forgive a bad mount. A tablet will not.
An iPad with a case weighs a pound or more. Put that on a vent clip & the vent louvers bend. Put it on a press-on suction cup & the first hot afternoon drops it on the floor mat. Stick it to the dash with adhesive & you get to scrape that off next spring.
Truck owners figure this out fast, which is why "ipad mount for truck" searches are full of people on their second or third attempt. So let's skip to the version that works.
Why Vent Clips & Suction Cups Fail With Tablet Weight
It comes down to leverage.
A tablet is wide, so its weight sits far from the mounting point. Every bump in the road multiplies that weight into a twisting load on the mount. Vent clips have almost no grip to resist it. Press-on suction cups rely on a rubber seal that softens with heat & lets go under exactly that kind of load.

For a pickup you own, the vehicle-specific dash mount is the answer. It bolts into factory tray or trim points, so nothing is drilled & the platform is steel. For a truck you can't modify, a pump-style vacuum cup is the only no-drill option we trust with a tablet. We explained why in our suction cup post.
Choosing Arm Length & Ball Size for a Tablet
Start with the ball. A 1-inch ball handles tablets up to about 11 inches with no drama, & it's what the whole Mountech system uses. Go to a 1.5-inch ball only for 12 to 13-inch tablets that live in the truck full time.
Then pick the arm by reach, not by habit. All three live in the Mounting Arms collection.
The shorter the arm, the less leverage the tablet has on the ball. Longer is more flexible, not more rigid.
Picking a Tablet Holder

Just confirm the holder has a 1-inch ball or an AMPS plate on the back. If it does, it is compatible with everything below.
Step by Step: Mounting an iPad on a BuiltRight Dash Mount
This is the setup we'd build ourselves in an F-150, Tacoma, Wrangler or Bronco, on a BuiltRight dash mount.
- Install the vehicle-specific dash mount into the factory tray. Basic hand tools, no drilling, 15 to 30 minutes
- Bolt a SpinLok 4-Bolt Ball Mount to the dash mount's AMPS slots. Slide it to the position that gives the cleanest sightline
- Clamp the arm onto the ball. Start with the medium arm for a tablet
- Attach your tablet holder to the arm's top ball
- Set the angle, tighten the arm knob until the SpinLok locks, & load the tablet
Then sit in the driver's seat & check it. You should be able to see the top of the screen without looking away from the road for long, & the tablet should not block any part of the windshield or the center display.
Cable Routing, Airbag Clearance & Visibility
Three things to get right before you call it done.
Run the charging cable behind the arm & along the dash seam so it never loops in front of the screen. A set of cable clips keeps it from swinging into the gear selector.
Keep the tablet out of the deployment path of the passenger airbag & any knee airbag. Vehicle-specific dash mounts are positioned with this in mind, which is one more reason to use one instead of improvising.
State laws on windshield obstruction vary, but the practical rule is simple. If the tablet blocks any part of your view through the glass, it is in the wrong spot. Above the center display, angled toward the driver, is the sweet spot in most trucks.
