Toyota Tacoma Phone Mount Guide: 2nd Gen vs. 3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen (and Where to Mount It)
Ask a Tacoma forum what phone mount to buy and you'll get forty answers, most of them for a different generation than yours.
That's the real problem with this question. The right answer depends entirely on which Tacoma you drive, and on the newest trucks, which screen it left the factory with. A part that fits a 3rd gen dash has nothing to do with a 4th gen dash, and neither has anything to do with a 2008 truck.
This guide walks through every Tacoma generation, the factory mounting points each dash actually offers, and the hardware that bolts to them. Which Tacoma Do You Have, and Where Does a Mount Bolt On?

Every path above ends in the same place: a 1" (25.4 mm) SpinLok ball, a double socket arm, and the device holder of your choice. That is the point of building on a standard instead of buying a disposable one-piece mount. When a direct-fit base lands for your generation, the arm and holder move across unchanged.
2024+: The 8-Inch vs. 14-Inch Screen Question
Toyota builds the 2024+ Tacoma with two different infotainment screens, and they change the dash enough to need different answers.
The 8" screen leaves a usable shelf of dash above and around the display. We machine a dedicated billet dash mount for exactly that configuration. The 14" screen swallows that real estate. The oversized display changes the bezel and the surrounding trim, so the 8" mount does not carry over, and we are not going to tell you it does. 2016–2023: The Rail Ecosystem Is Your Friend
The 3rd gen is the most common truck in the Tacoma world and it has the healthiest aftermarket dash ecosystem of any generation. Several companies make dash rails and brackets that install into the 3rd gen dash using factory hardware points.
Here is what most owners miss: nearly all of those rails are slotted for the AMPS hole pattern, the four-hole 1.181" × 1.496" (30 mm × 38 mm) standard we broke down in our AMPS mounting pattern guide. Any AMPS-slotted rail becomes a full Mountech system with one inexpensive part.
- Pick your rail. Any 3rd gen dash rail or bracket with AMPS slots works
- Bolt on a Mountech 4-Bolt Base. Four bolts, done
- Thread on a SpinLok Ball Mount
- Add a double socket arm and a holder, spring cradle or MagSafe

1995–2015: The No-Drill Option That Actually Holds
Older Tacoma dashes predate the accessory-rail era, and we are not going to invent a bolt-on kit that does not exist. The honest answer for a 1st or 2nd gen truck is the Heavy Duty Vacuum Cup Mount.
We know. We spent years telling people not to buy suction mounts, and then we built one anyway. The difference is the mechanism: a 4.5" die-cast aluminum vacuum cup rated to 120 lb of pull, not a press-on suction disc. It holds on textured dashes and windshields, it survives summer heat, and it ends in the same 1" SpinLok ball as every other base. It is also the right call for a leased or borrowed truck of any generation, and for 14"-screen 4th gens.
Where to Mount a Phone in a Tacoma
Four spots get debated in every Tacoma thread. Here is the engineering read on each.
Above or beside the screen
Near your sightline, clear of airbags, no glare penalty, and it loads structure rather than trim. This is where the 4th gen kit and the 3rd gen rail builds put you.
Vent clips
Fine for a commuter car. On a truck that sees dirt roads, plastic louvers carry a cantilevered phone on corrugations. They also block airflow exactly where you want it in summer.
Windshield
A vacuum cup on glass holds extremely well, but check your state first. Several states restrict windshield-mounted devices, and California allows only defined corner zones.
Cup holder. You have two cup holders and a truck full of dust. Keep the coffee.
Spring Cradle vs. MagSafe on Washboard Roads
Both holders live on the same 1" ball, so this is a swap, not a commitment.
The spring-loaded cradle physically clamps the phone. It is the right answer for repeated hard washboard, thick cases, and anyone who has watched a phone eject on a trail. It fits phones up to 3.4" wide and 0.5" thick.

Arm Length, Airbag Clearance & Cable Routing
Mountech double socket arms come in 1.5", 3" and 6" socket-to-socket lengths, all rated to 2 lb. Shorter is stiffer: every inch of arm multiplies the leverage road vibration puts on the joint. Start with the shortest arm that reaches your sightline. On the 4th gen dash mount that is usually the 1.5" or 3"; rail-mounted 3rd gen setups vary with where you land the base.
Keep the phone out of deployment zones: off the steering column area and away from the passenger airbag panel on the dash top.
Route the charging cable before you tighten the arm, so it drapes behind the dash line instead of across your instruments.
Sit in the driver's seat and check. You should read the top of the screen without looking away from the road for long.

Will a RAM mount work in a Tacoma?

Is a phone mount legal where I live?
Dash mounts that do not obstruct your view are the safe answer everywhere. Windshield placement is state-dependent; California allows only defined corner zones, and several states prohibit windshield-mounted devices outright.

The 2024+ platform carried into 2025. The 8" vs. 14" screen question is still the deciding factor.
